ABSTRACT
Organic Chemistry assumes that the reader is familiar with the fundamentals of organic chemistry. This chapter serves as a review of core concepts, specifically electron configuration and bonding. Readers are given a first-principles perspective on how electrons are arranged around atoms. From there ionic bonding is discussed, including a discussion of Coulomb's law, before moving on to covalent bonding. First, an understanding of Lewis structures is developed before moving on to quantum mechanical treatments of covalent bonding: valence bond theory and molecular orbital theory.
