ABSTRACT

A new type of steel cap beam is proposed in this paper, combined with common steel plate composite girder bridges. Numerical simulation and scaled model test are used to study the static performance of hybrid structure which consists of steel cap beam and concrete column. In the test, the steel cantilever beam had the characteristic of bending and shear force under eccentric load and the root section was the most unfavorable. However, due to welding defects, the local buckling occurs at webs. By comparing the result of numerical and experimental study, in the state of ultimate bearing capacity, local buckling of webs is more likely to occur at the middle or the root section of steel cantilever beam, depends on whether there are welding defects at the transversal diaphragms. Specifically, the safety factor of steel cap beam in the test with welding defect is 2.8 while that of the finite element model without welding defect is 4.
