ABSTRACT

This article focuses on the analysis of the carbon emissions of different concrete road bridges together with possibilities of reducing their carbon footprint. Reducing carbon emissions is of increasing importance to owners, consultants and contractors alike, the whole industry is in transition to reduce their impact. Infrastructure projects have a significant carbon footprint due to the large quantities of consumed materials.

A key focus for the project owner, The Danish Road Directorate, is to reduce the carbon emissions from the construction of Kalundborg Motorway Stage 3. For the road bridges in the project, a life cycle analysis is made comparing the carbon emissions of different types of concrete bridges. The potential savings in carbon emissions from choosing the concrete bridge type is significant and the results of the analysis are highlighted and elaborated in this article.
