ABSTRACT

Accolade Measurement have been conducting load testing in the UK since 1993. Notable examples include suspended trusses of the Cleveland Bridge in Bath, reinforced concrete deck hinge joints of the M4 Usk River Bridge after they were strengthened by post-tensioning, a jetty at Jarrow and a vehicle parking floor at Luton. Tests have involved load application by rolling heavy vehicles, concrete kentledge blocks and water bags. Measurements of displacements and strains have used permanent structural health monitoring systems, temporarily fixed sensors, total stations and digital image correlation; each of which have their advantages and limitations. Other tests on cantilevers, parapets, lifting systems, buildings and mezzanine floors have added to the body of knowledge. Where numerical assessments are unsuitable and leave uncertainties, proof load tests have demonstrated capacity for vehicle loading. This paper draws on experience of Accolade and the author’s career, to present some interesting cases and highlight lessons learnt.
