ABSTRACT

Chemistry is the study of matter and change. This chapter introduces fundamental terminology in terms of classifying matter based on its composition (element, compound, homogeneous mixture, or heterogeneous mixture) and its state (gas, solid, or liquid). A brief discussion is given of the periodic table and definitions of the different collective terms (e.g. metals, nonmetals, metalloids, halogens, and others). After classifying matter, the differences between chemical and physical properties are elucidated, and examples are given. Finally, the chapter concludes by discussing chemical and physical changes. This chapter provides foundational language which will be employed throughout the rest of the text.
