ABSTRACT

The government of India prioritised sanitation and hygiene with various campaigns launched across the country in the early 1990s. Today, the sanitation issue has been revived with much vigour under the Swacch Bharat Abhiyan, an initiative of the central government. This study aimed at evaluating the trends in sanitation and hygiene in five states that had performed above average concerning sanitation coverage, and data-based insights and recommendations were provided.

The study analyses the trends in sanitation and identifies the inflection points for policy change, local factors, agencies, and other change-makers in the field of sanitation. The study then explores the primary reasons behind what, how, and why the major changes in the sanitation sector occurred in the five states and analyses the impact on health indicators.
