ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the transformative role of facial recognition (FR) technology powered by advanced AI and data science in creating safer, more sustainable urban environments across diverse Indian cities. Through detailed case studies of Surat, Delhi, and Chennai, it highlights FR’s capacity to address complex urban challenges – ranging from real-time crime detection and missing persons identification to predictive enforcement of repeat offenders. The discussion emphasizes robust system architectures; human-centered design principles that ensure transparency, privacy, and trust; and ethical governance while aligning these technological interventions in FR deployments with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The chapter offers insights on scalable adoption pathways and measurable impacts, providing a blueprint for policymakers and technologists worldwide to harness FR for inclusive and resilient smart cities.
