ABSTRACT
The objective of this chapter is to provide a critical discussion on the health effects of non-ionizing radiation (NIR) exposure among the general public and workers in Africa. NIR, which includes ultraviolet (UV) radiation, radiofrequency (RF) radiation, microwave radiation, and extremely low-frequency (ELF) fields, is a growing concern due to increasing exposure from technological advancements and urbanization. In this chapter, narrative review on health effects from exposure to NIR is provided and sources of NIR are identified and discussed. Furthermore, the chapter provides an overview of understanding public awareness and proposing future directions for research and policy regarding NIR exposure in Africa.
