ABSTRACT
Starting with Lord Kelvin's “Thunderstorm” experiment we explore early studies of electrical signals from the atmosphere. For a long time physicists were stumped about what was causing this. They explored if the radiation could be coming from the ground or from space. Finally, Hess's famous balloon proved the particles causing it came from space.
