ABSTRACT
Scientists quickly figured out if you want to see cosmic rays from space you need to go to space with a satellite to avoid atmospheric backgrounds. We describe the design of these early satellites. Many of the basic components are still used in satellites today. In 1989 they developed a new technique that measures the Cherenkov radiation from cosmic-ray-induced air showers in the atmosphere, allowing the first ground-based gamma-ray observatories.
