ABSTRACT

Growth that meets present needs without endangering the capacity of future generations to meet their own is referred to by the United Nations as sustainable development. The sustainable development goals (SDGs) aim to eliminate global poverty and inequality; protect the environment; and provide prosperity, fairness, and health for everyone, ensuring that nobody is left behind. Sustainability concepts are often divided into three categories: economic, environmental, and social. Governments and corporations have committed to sustainable goals, including decreasing environmental impact and conserving resources. The “Internet of Things” (IoT) refers to a network of connected objects and technology that allows them to communicate with the cloud and each other. Smart IoT is an effective tool for ushering advancement and sustainability in real time and also helps in mitigating climate change. Sustainability is the sure pathway for a better future where technological advancement is sustained without any negative effects on the environment and its inhabitants either at present or in the future. The Internet of Things makes it easy to run simulations and generate scenarios before the actual process or activity is carried out so as to determine the best course of action. The Internet of Things also narrows down the possibility of human error and miscalculations as artificial intelligence with the right programming is very efficient, making life easier and things are done quicker, saving time and resources, cumbersome and complex tasks that will take days to carry out can be done in a matter of minutes due to the application of Internet of Things. This write-up focuses on the key challenges and opportunities of implementing smart IoT solutions for sustainability in developing countries. Some of the challenges include erratic power supply (energy), lack of maintenance culture, inadequate technical know-how, poor internet service, inadequate cybersecurity, and so on, and opportunities include the creation of cyber jobs, the advent of online businesses and services, improved banking (online banking), improved communication sector, online learning (virtual learning), and so on. The research is in tandem with SDGs, COP, and millennium development goals (MDGs), all of which advocate the conservation and protection of the environment.
