ABSTRACT

The Østlig Ringvej (Eastern Ring Road) project at Copenhagen, now under development by the Owner Sund & Bælt will comprise about 10km of road tunnels, of which the main part will be constructed as immersed tunnels. The paper presents the methodology developed to analyze the carbon emissions from the materials, transports to site, and construction activities using an advanced LCA (Life Cycle Assessment), and it summarizes the results obtained for the baseline design and construction following recent normal practice. The paper further describes the systematic and innovative process which has been taken to identify and assess a large number of possible carbon emission saving measures, and it finally discusses the approach which may be taken to implement the most favorable measures in the final design and execution.
