ABSTRACT

Gender-based violence (GBV) is a driver of the misuse of technologies—including harmful content and stalking—that spills over from the internet to products in the home, workplace, and on the streets. GBV encompasses a wide range of harms, targets, and threat models—all of which impact trust and safety work. This chapter outlines the intersections of GBV and trust and safety work at points of intervention ranging from responding to harmful actions to promoting Safety by Design. We also address the challenges trust and safety professionals face when doing this work: impacts to well-being; limited resources to respond to survivors; working with partners in civil society and beyond; and navigating perceived tensions between free speech and creating welcoming, safe communities.
