ABSTRACT

Objectives: This experimental study used a one-group pretest-posttest design. The subjects of this study were 30 FKG Universitas Mahasaraswati Denpasar students who met the research criteria. Methods: This study began by collecting saliva using the spitting method. Saliva was allowed to accumulate in the oral cavity and expelled into a saliva pot every minute. Saliva pH measurement was performed using a pH meter. Data collected included saliva pH before and after administering probiotic lozenges and a placebo. Results: showed that the mean saliva pH before consuming probiotic lozenges was 5.83±0.46, which increased to 6.38±0.40; the placebo was 5.72±0.40, which increased to 5.86±0.44. Based on the difference in mean pH before and after treatment, it was found that consuming probiotic lozenges significantly increased saliva pH (p< 0.05). Conclusion: Consuming probiotic lozenges (Lactobacillus reuteri prodentis) effectively increases saliva pH as a preventive therapy for periodontal disease.
