ABSTRACT

The research paper deals with the theme of marginalization in the world renowned Indian epic Mahabharata, as seen through the perspective of the character which has not been talked much about- Karna's wife. This character has been discussed in detail in the novel Karna's Wife: The Outcast's Queen. The paper examines how Karna's marginalized status, owing to his complex lineage and societal prejudice, impacts both him and his wife, highlighting multi-dimensional consequences of social discrimination. Drawing from various researches on Mahabharata and analyzing the narrative choices made by author Kavita Kane in her novel, this paper aims to illuminate the marginalized existence of Karna, exploring how his low caste background influences his identity, and decisions. The paper also tries to explore the effect of marginalization not only on Karna but also on his family, specifically on his wife as a key agent of understanding. Urvi, Karna's wife, develops as a crucial character whose perspective adds depth to the portrayal of marginalization, shedding light on the challenges she faces as the spouse of an outcaste warrior. The paper scrutinizes the emotional and psychological implications of Karna's position on his wife, unfolding the complexities of love, loyalty, and societal expectations.
