ABSTRACT
This chapter summarizes some of the advancements and key current challenges in microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) research. Despite decades of investigation, MIC remains an evolving field with critical knowledge gaps, particularly regarding fundamental mechanisms, effective publishing practices, standardized methods, and the integration of advanced technologies. By examining the state of scientific communication, the importance of standardized protocols, the potential of artificial intelligence and molecular microbiology, the chapter highlights both the progress made and the challenges that persist. It further emphasizes the need for collaborative efforts and transdisciplinary approaches to ensure that research not only bridges the gap between laboratory studies and field applications but also aligns more closely with industrial needs. Strengthening collaborations between academia and industry, improving communication, and promoting the integration of applied findings into practice are vital steps toward transforming MIC research into actionable solutions for real-world challenges.
