ABSTRACT

The history of Taylor & Francis has been closely identified throughout with the fortunes of the Philosophical Magazine. This chapter looks at the development of the journal. By the time Richard Taylor joined Tilloch in 1822, the first part of this title had been changed to ‘The Philosophical Magazine and Journal’, but the rest remained the same. When Phillips became an editor the entire title was simplified to ‘The Philosophical Magazine or Annals of Chemistry, Mathematics, Astronomy, Natural History and General Science’. The contents of the Philosophical Magazine have become increasingly specialised with the passage of time. As its title indicated, the original journal covered an enormous spread of science and technology. Topics that later came under the general umbrella of physics were quite well represented-perhaps a quarter of all the items, but subjects such as chemistry and geography were equally prominent.
