ABSTRACT
I first saw the mathematical model 1 for population growth we are about to study, i.e., the Schwartz chart, in an article by Richard H. Schwartz, cf., [619, pp. 38–41]. 2 Using Schwartz charts we can get a good understanding of how populations grow (or shrink)—amazingly good, considering that we employ only a few simple rules that require only addition and multiplication to fill out the chart. I have yet to meet a student who cannot get started and make real progress using this model.
