ABSTRACT

Air pollution, as well as other environmental disturbances, may be local, regional or global, depending on the area where its consequences are manifested. The air pollution is important for the biosphere because of the vital role of the atmosphere for the environmental equilibrium of the planet and for the organisms. The main source of air pollution is energy production by burning solid and liquid fuels. Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless, tasteless and extremely poisonous gas. In the air, it is oxidized to carbon dioxide. Nitrogen monoxide is mainly produced by the oxidation of atmospheric N2 either in internal combustion engines through the conditions of high temperature and pressure that prevail there or by the burning of natural gas. High concentrations of nitrogen oxides in the atmosphere of some cities, in conjunction with high concentrations of gaseous hydrocarbons and under the influence of solar radiation, lead to a series of photochemical reactions.
