ABSTRACT

Amputation is an important skill for physicians practicing in the developing world. Extremity injuries requiring amputation are caused by road-traffic accidents, 1 workplace injuries, 2 natural disasters, interpersonal violence, and warfare. 3 Neurovascular complications of diabetes compounded by poor nutrition are other leading causes of amputation. 4 When aggressive efforts at limb salvage fail, decisive and skillful amputation provides the best hope for survival and optimal functional outcome.
