ABSTRACT

There are three layers to the model, which allows it to be considered at a number of different levels. First is the overall structure in which self-directedness is held up by three pillars of skills, motivation and self-belief. The second layer of our model of self-directedness is the theory used to add depth and structure to each of our pillars. The Skills Pillar is structured around Kolb’s Experiential Learning Cycle: concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation. Finally, the third layer of the model is the one that will be different for each individual learner and context. This provides the bricks that are used to build up each of the categories within each pillar. The bricks that are relevant will need to be selected by the educator and used as appropriate to develop self-directedness.
