ABSTRACT
The number of war memorials in Ukraine is staggering. By the mid-1980s, one official account already mentioned a figure of over 40,000 monuments related to the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45. 1 That is an average of ten thousand for every year the war had lasted, according to the official Soviet chronology, or for every decade that had passed since the war ended. Since then, as we will see in detail in the next chapter, many more have been added, honoring not just the Second World War but also other conflicts, most importantly the war in the Donbas region since 2014, known in Ukraine as the Anti-Terrorist Operation or ATO. 2
