Lymphatic mapping and sentinel lymphadenectomy for breast cancer

The sentinel lymph node is defined as the first node in the regional lymphatic basin which recovers lymph from the primary tumour. Using a supravital blue dye the authors were able to identify intra-operatively the sentinel lymph node draining a breast cancer and were able to show that this reflected axillary node status in the majority of patients.
