Until this paper was published, all previous work on estrogen action had been confined to isolated biochemical systems of questionable relevance or intact animal studies. By providing data that an isolated, clonal cell culture system could be made to respond in physiologically relevant ways to estrogens and antiestrogens, a model system was provided which would allow detailed subsequent studies to outline both the affector and effector limb of hormone responsivity; that is, steps following the interaction of estrogen with its receptor leading to alterations in gene expression and an analysis of downstream gene products influenced by activated estrogen-receptor complexes.
