ABSTRACT
Term once used to refer to early Acheulean stone-tool assemblages in Europe. This “stage” of tool technology was distinguished by crude, thick handaxes made by hard-hammer percussion. It was named after Abbeville (France), where a Middle Pleistocene site in the 45-m terrace of the Somme River yielded roughly made handaxes.
