ABSTRACT
Interpretation based on reason (tafsīr bi al-raʾy) has occupied an uncomfortable place in the discipline of tafsīr. The aim of this chapter is to show that tafsīr bi al-raʾy in fact has an important role to play in Qurʾānic interpretation. In this chapter, I present an overview of the arguments about the legitimacy of tafsīr bi al-raʾy.
