ABSTRACT
This is the final one of four chapters on short-term strategies currently in use in schools to combat truancy and other forms of absenteeism. It concludes the first part of the book as thereafter the contents focus on longer-term solutions and new emergent issues. The issues presented and discussed in this chapter are listed in Figure 3.1 numbers 76 to 119. They take the number of potential short-term solutions to almost a hundred and twenty. By their very title and nature, some of the ideas considered in this chapter will only require a minimum of discussion as most will already be well known to staff in schools and the education welfare service. Therefore, they are described using a ‘potted’ format. Some of these schemes, however, may well be new to some readers; not least some of the concepts based on developments in information technology.
