ABSTRACT
This chapter outlines the findings in a number of countries on people’s reasons for becoming teachers. It considers the influence of school cultures on the experience of teaching and on choice of teaching. It explores the reasons offered by the school leavers and student teachers in this study for choosing teaching. It gives their views on the reasons for the declining numbers of men in teaching and their suggestions on what should be done.
