Introduction

This volume of essays honors the work of the late Josef Steindl (1912-1993). The essays were originally solicited for a special issue of the journal Social Concept, and all but two of the essays began as submissions to that issue.1 The project of collecting and editing the essays began in the Fall of 1991. Steindl himself was involved in the early stages of the project, and he encouraged its editors and commented favorably on its contents.
