Box 2.3 Air pollution and urban and peri-urban agriculture in South Asia

Concerns voiced by farmers in developing countries are not dissimilar to those voiced by peri-urban farmers in the developed world. Bryant and Johnston (1992) carried out a survey in the US of farming in what they called the ‘city’s countryside’ and found that key among concerns of farmers were changes in the local community, there being too much traffic, the problems of trespassing and vandalism, and complaints from non-farm neighbours.
