ABSTRACT

Much research on urban areas and the relationships between urban and rural areas in the developing world is focused on the rapid population growth of cities. Past research on both urban growth and rural poverty has focused on the role of the movement of people into cities. This chapter examines the flows of people between the urban and rural areas. It discusses the motivation behind people’s movements and their place in strategies for maintaining livelihoods.
