The research which illustrates the positive benefits of remittances argues that they can fulfil an insurance and an investment role. There is debate about the relative significance of the roles in rural society. One of the difficulties of assessing the relative value of remittances is that small amounts sent from an urban cash-based economy can represent substantial amounts in a cash-starved rural economy.
