ABSTRACT
Chapter 7 begins by outlining ways to research the meanings of words by eliciting vocabulary using semantic domains. We describe various non-linguistic stimuli and semi-experimental tasks that can also be used to elicit vocabulary and meanings. We suggest that fieldworkers also pay attention to special register vocabulary and meanings, and other types of language associated with particular social contexts. We introduce various types of dictionaries, starting with examples of some simple ones and then moving on to look at different categories of information that can go in to a dictionary. We stress the importance of organising linguistic data in a consistent and structured way so that it can later be used to make dictionaries and other resources. We identify and consider the currently available tools for making and displaying dictionaries.
