ABSTRACT
This chapter develops the theme by scrutinizing how current smart mobile information and communication technologies are actually situated within the contexts of young people's daily lives. It explores the incorporation of smart mobile technologies into young people's daily lives in the form of both background and foreground activities. The chapter looks at the strategies, priorities and tensions associated with shifts between background activities and a foreground setting in various temporal, social—spatial, and activity contexts. It focuses on an in-depth case study of young people's use of smart mobile platforms, employing a time-geographic approach and research methodology. The chapter argues that the basic time-geographic model, describing the individual's daily life as an unbroken sequence of primary activities. It includes a description of background time use comprising bundles of online activities performed in parallel with primary activities. The chapter contributes by presenting tentative findings and suggesting issues that merit exploration in further research.
