ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews some of the present international literature in criminology on crime prevention (CP) activities aimed at youth in rural settings in Sweden. It focuses on the role of community in dealing with the problem in rural municipalities through CP initiatives. Youth-related problems are the main CP concern, transformed into different types of intervention, from early offending careers, to violence and alcohol and drug addiction. The Kronoberg model aims to prevent young people from drinking alcohol in public places and ultimately helps to reduce youth violence in these settings. The method involves the police intervening systematically with young people in town who are drunk or carrying alcohol and pouring out the alcohol onsite. To reduce the use of alcohol and other drugs by teenagers, Gnosjo has been applying together with a number of other municipalities in Sweden a prevention program that empowers parents to publicize zero tolerance to the use of alcohol and drugs.
