ABSTRACT

As the economy changes and places greater emphasis on knowledge work and employment, communities will face varying experiences. Some will benefit greatly due to their well-educated workforce and proximity to the centers of innovation, and research and development for the global economy. Other communities will face challenges finding a path that will offer opportunity to workers who may have received less training and education, or for communities in distress from the deindustrialization process. The positive future foretold by Daniel Bell may have come true for educated workers in a post-industrial society, but for the people and places disconnected from the growth sources, the future is less positive.
