ABSTRACT
In this chapter, I discuss staff development in the context of the recognition of people as a valuable and valued resource by institutions and funding councils. I explore the implications of national standards for the accreditation of staff training at a time of rapid change. Systems of appointment, induction and promotion are considered as quality issues. Models of appraisal and their application in the promotion of institutional quality are analysed. I discuss models for the organization of the staff development function within the institution and the ways that individual staff development effort and the support of the team and organization may interrelate to enable individuals and the institution to function efficiently and effectively.
