ABSTRACT
This is the matter-of-fact way in which Simon Jeffrey describes Cara SHS where he is the principal. Initially on talking to him one gets the impression that he has had little to do with the dynamism of the school and the interesting programmes which it has to offer. Simon was to become the catalyst for change, the major driving force, harnessing the innovative ideas of others and motivating them to pursue their individual visions within the context of a school plan. Simon is far from happy with all aspects of EDWA's policies on restructuring, devolution and school development planning. Simon encourages his teachers to adopt a similar perspective with their pupils and also with their peers, stating regularly that what schools need are ‘people managers as well as subject managers’.
