ABSTRACT
The revolution in Iran, the rise of Shi'ite fundamentalism in largely Sunni-Muslim-dominated countries in the Persian Gulf and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan were among the main reasons for a rapid increase in military expenditure and arms imports in the Gulf countries in the late 1970s.
