ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 provides a general discussion of dialectical principles and their utility in the primatological context. This chapter sets the stage for the study of the past, present and future of life in the hominoid niche. A critical lens is established, and through this lens certain modes of production within primatological practice are examined. Finally, this chapter begins the discussion of how a dialectical approach to research and conservation may help to facilitate an informed and compassionate coexistence between humans and the other hominoid taxa.
