ABSTRACT

This chapter frames the twin concerns the book takes up around violence and silence. It gives background on how and why the research began and the influence of liberation theology on the approach adopted. It recalls the testimony given to a disturbing execution in El Salvador and the impact this had on my theological research. It then sets out the trajectory of the book as a journey that follows Jesus’ suffering through strippings, mocking, and crucifixion to a final chapter that explores human dignity, the meaning of resurrection, and why acknowledging crucifixion as sexual violence matters.
