ABSTRACT

The Christian tradition affirms the importance of seeking and telling the truth, even truths which might be painful, disturbing, and in some ways ‘unspeakable’. But is any meaningful purpose served by seeing and investigating crucifixion as sexual violence? This chapter explores how understanding crucifixion as sexual violence might serve to reduce victim-blaming and promote dignity. Two key messages are ‘you are not alone’ and ‘you are not to blame’. Extreme care is needed to speak about resurrection and God’s love in the context of sexual abuse, and the chapter discusses how this might be approached in an appropriate way.
