ABSTRACT
Olive Senior proposes “grounding” as a vital indigenous epistemology with which to approach Caribbean identity and reclamation of history. “Ground truth” obtained by direct, empirical observation takes precedence over “book truth” derived from knowledge prioritized in colonial institutions. Michael Bucknor’s description of the alternative cosmologies governed by “grung poetics” mirror the subversive nature of speculative fiction tradition in the Anglophone Caribbean. Therefore, this chapter engages both “grung poetics” and spec-fic using fiction by Grenadian sci-fi writer and futurist Tobias Buckell. Using sci-fi tropes deployed with a Jamaican aesthetic, his work demonstrates the viability of “grung” poetics in illustrating a decolonial Caribbean future.
