ABSTRACT

This chapter articulates the concept of “the future imaginary” generally and anchored in Indigenous contexts specifically. The concept describes visions of the future that are shared by a group of people and used to motivate change in the present. Future imaginaries provide groups with a shared vocabulary for discussing the future and strategies for getting to the future they desire. Drawing on Grace Dillon, Charles Taylor and Adrienne Maree Brown, among others, I use the work of the Initiative for Indigenous Futures to illustrate how to advance Indigenous-determined visions of the future.
