ABSTRACT

This short chapter examines the common understanding of Toni Morrison’s ideas about writing for the “white gaze” as a launch point to discuss assumptions about reality, time, space, and narratives suitable for storytelling. The upending of conventional narratives creates the potential to tell stories that don’t reinforce self-destruction, powerlessness, and hopelessness for Indigenous peoples/peoples of color. A way opens to imagine new freedoms, new tomorrows, and new transformations.
