ABSTRACT

This chapter continues the theoretical perspective of the book by explaining how the new ethics paradigm is consistent with discourse in professional ethics. Just as the new ethics paradigm provides a robust framework for examining the established fields of clinical ethics and organizational ethics, it does the same for professional ethics. The framework of the ethics paradigm focuses on the concept of identity (reflecting who we are), on the concept of accountability (reflecting how we function), and on the concept of quality (reflecting what we do). This framework brings cohesion to varied discourse in professional ethics, including issues related to healthcare executives, healthcare management, health professions, nursing, and public administration. This chapter concludes the theoretical perspective of the book that explains the ethics paradigm as being consistent with professional ethics as well as with clinical ethics and organizational ethics (as discussed earlier). This framework can then be applied to the emerging field of governance ethics in healthcare organizations.
