ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces the subject, previous research on married women, central terminology, and the sources and author’s database. The purpose is twofold—1, to provide readers unfamiliar with either medieval Sweden or research on women’s agency (or both) with the background knowledge needed to understand the rest of the book; and 2, to give more knowledgeable readers the specifics of this study compared with those of others.
