ABSTRACT

Since evolution was developed in a Christian context, and it has had longstanding appropriations and discussions through Christian lenses, it is important to appreciate and understand how Christian thinkers have grappled with the theory theologically and philosophically. This chapter reviews the responses to evolution by Christian theists (philosophers, theologians, and scientists). It will cover the positions of four broad interpretations: young-earth creationism (YEC), old-earth creationism (OEC), intelligent design (ID), and theistic evolution (TE). This review serves two purposes. First, it will help understand the intra-religious nuances specific to the Christian worldview, albeit non-exhaustively. Second, this review will serve as a useful reference for when contrasting with how Muslim thinkers have dealt with evolution, i.e. inter-religious analysis.
