ABSTRACT

The objectives of this chapter are twofold. The first objective is to highlight many of the relevant verses in the Qur’ān and ḥadīths pertinent to the discussion of evolution. The second objective is to compare and contrast the differences in the Islamic narrative and the Biblical one. As we shall see, some discussions are much more sensitive in certain Biblical narratives than Islamic ones. In particular, Islamic scripture has no qualms with the earth's age, Noah's flood, or the prophets’ lineage. Most importantly, Islamic thought has no concept of original sin. The key and the primary area of tension in Islamic scripture in the context of Islam and evolution is the creation narrative of Adam.
