ABSTRACT

In this chapter, a brief description of the specific development of English-medium instruction (EMI) in engineering education in Taiwan will first be given, followed by an account of the design and implementation of the Technical Writing and Research Methods course. This course consisted of two main parts: One provided the students with the basic principles and knowledge for conducting a small-scale research project in the field of information engineering, and the other equipped them with concepts and hands-on experience in writing up their own work following the criteria of English technical writing. The pedagogical “team teaching” strategy (Doiz et al., 2012) was integrated into the course design to improve efficiency in teaching and learning. In addition, the teaching materials and visual aids for this course were prepared in English, while the lectures were delivered in Mandarin. Students were required to write their assignments in English but were allowed to present their work orally in Mandarin. All these language alterations served as a good example of adopting a pedagogy of translanguaging (García & Li, 2014) in an English as a foreign language academic environment.
